Bangkok 2030: Towards a More Sustainable and Modern City

By 2030, Bangkok is reinventing itself through a series of ambitious projects aimed at modernizing its infrastructure, improving transportation, and increasing green spaces. This plan is based on two key pillars: the development of urban transportation and the Green Bangkok 2030 initiative, which promotes more sustainable and resilient urban planning in response to climate challenges.

Bangkok 2030: Towards a More Sustainable and Modern City

1. Urban Planning and Green Spaces : Towards a Greener City

The Green Bangkok 2030 project, initiated by the municipal government, aims to significantly increase the green spaces in Thailand's capital, which are currently insufficient compared to international standards.

The main objectives are:

  • Raise the urban canopy to 30% to reduce heat islands and improve air quality in the city.

  • Create 10 m² of green space per inhabitant by 2030, compared to less than 7 m² currently.

  • Transform underutilized land into parks, urban promenades, and miniature forests.

Several pilot projects have already been implemented, such as the development of linear parks along abandoned railway tracks and tree planting in densely populated neighborhoods. Private sector participation is also encouraged through incentives for building structures with green roofs and rooftop gardens.

2. Transportation: A Faster and More Accessible Network

Bangkok, known for its chronic traffic jams, is betting on a massive expansion of its public transport network to relieve road congestion and reduce pollution. Among the major projects set for completion by 2030:

Expansion of Metro and Monorail Lines

  • Orange Line of the MRT: This line will connect the west and east sides of the city, with an opening expected between 2028 and 2030.

  • Grey Line (monorail): A new 16.25 km line running from Watcharaphon to Thong Lo, designed to improve connectivity in residential areas.

  • Integration of Existing Networks: Efforts are being made to facilitate transfers between the BTS (skytrain), MRT (subway), and buses.

High-Speed Train to China

As part of the New Silk Road railway project, a Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima - Nong Khai link is under construction. This line will connect to Laos and eventually China, facilitating the transport of both passengers and goods. The inauguration is planned for 2030.

3. Objectives and Expected Benefits

These major transformations aim to:

✅ Reduce CO₂ emissions by promoting sustainable mobility and public transportation.

✅ Decrease road congestion, which currently paralyzes the local economy.

✅ Improve quality of life by creating a healthier and more pleasant urban environment.

✅ Attract investments by making Bangkok a model city for sustainable urbanism in Asia.

4. Innovation and Resilience

Alongside the development of transportation and green spaces, Bangkok 2030 integrates initiatives to strengthen its resilience against environmental and technological challenges. One of the major focuses is the energy transition, with the promotion of renewable energy and the gradual electrification of public transportation. Additionally, the city is investing in sustainable water management to reduce recurring flooding. Finally, Bangkok aims to become a "smart city" by developing connected infrastructure and digitalized urban services for better resource management.

Conclusion

Bangkok 2030: Towards a More Sustainable and Modern City. The project represents a true revolution for the Thai capital. By combining the development of transportation infrastructure and urban reforestation, the city is positioning itself to become a more modern, efficient, and eco-friendly metropolis. If the objectives are met, Bangkok could very well establish itself as a model of urban transition for major Asian cities.
